The following summary from a recent literature review may help:

1. Pre-exercise feeding enhances performance during prolonged (> 60 minutes) aerobic routines. No such effect occurs with routines of shorter duration.
2. Nutrient timing, meal composition, and carbohydrate glycemic index influence performance. Additionally they should be tailored based on the type of routine.
3. Fasted aerobic routines mobilize and promote free fatty acid utilization (I.e. burns fat). However, this effect was generally not seen with sedentary/obese/overweight sample populations.
4. Future studies are required to establish nutritional strategies which optimise metabolic and performance adaptations to exercise.
